Our gender empowerment program has seen an organic growth, as more community members are becoming aware of the benefits of joining our projects.
We are excited to announce that we have added another women’s group to the program.
Our original women’s group has been running for several years and this year we focused on business and finance skills. Word soon spread and more women started to turn-up to our project. It soon became clear that two smaller groups was more beneficial for the women than one large one. And so, the newer members’ group was created. Already a firm favorite with the staff and volunteers the focus with these women is to start the workshops the other women had already completed. To date this has centered on cervical cancer. One in five women in Zambia show evidence of cervical cancer, so understanding the symptoms early and learning on the importance of vaginal health is vital.
Additionally, we wrote last quarter about the addition of the Grade 5 Girls at Linda South and this has gone from strength-to- strength. Already the girl’s understanding of English has improved, and this has been reflected in their confidence and sense of self worth. We have focused on building upon this with talks on the self-esteem and understanding the difference between positive and negative relationships.
We expect great things from all our women, girls and boys in our projects and are excited about the future. Once we have the community centre we can then look at expanding these projects further and empowering even more of the community.
We are currently looking for the perfect piece of land to purchase and then will start building following the purchase. We are so thankful for everyone's support and cannot wait to get this Center up and running!
