Building Capacity for NGO sustainability !

By Matthew Aubry | Executive Director

The Organization for Responsible Governance (ORG) has furthered our objective to help other NPO’s to build their operational capacity by providing  assessment and subsequent training support to the organizational and operational capacity of Faith-based NGOs  operating on the Island of Grand Bahama.

ORG’s objectives were to

  • Provide a context and framework for the upward trajectory of the Groups.
  • Help NGO stakeholders identify shared concerns and priority actions and facilitate a dialogue to discuss organizational issues.
  • Develop strategic opportunities through training for the NGO and other service based groups in the community to increase resilience and sustainability.

ORG’s intervention consisted of

  1. A comprehensive review of (1) Organizational structures and Management, (2) Financial management, (3) Leadership and group dynamics, (4) Project Cycle Management, (5) External relations.
  2. Preparation of an Organizational report on the status and capacity of the FBO to execute its programs and outcomes.
  3. Training to increase of the resilience and sustainability of the NGO with priorities based on the outcomes of the assessment. Training and Coaching was  offered  both online and in person as permitted by current Social Distancing protocol.

During the training ORG led  offer the leadership, volunteers, and staff of the NGO and other service based groups from the Grand Bahamas community in a sequence of in person and virtual trainings to support capacity growth in the areas of Leadership and Group Dynamics, Organizational Structure and Management, External Relations, and Communications.

The training provided skills and resources that were designed to help the groups  develop  the following  Outcomes:

  • Effective Committee governance, including strategic oversight and planning.
  • Clear organizational delineation and coordination of Committee, Management and employee roles.
  • Common Leadership vision and goals across the organization.
  • Consistent internal operational structures and systems to support the FBO in achieving its mission.
  • Sustainable financial management, analysis, and decisions.
  • Stronger External Relations.

This project served as proof of concept. With further funding ORG can provide trainings to  small NGOs across more communities in The Bahamas.
