Building a Dream Room in a Paediatric ward

Dream rooms” in a pediatric ward refer to specially designed, imaginative, and comforting spaces that help children feel safe, entertained, and emotionally supported during their hospital stay. These rooms go beyond basic functionality to create an immersive, healing environment that feels more like a dream world than a hospital.

1.Sensory Rooms

  • Designed for children with sensory needs, including autism or developmental delays.
  • Features include: bubble tubes, fiber-optic lights, calming music, weighted blankets, and textured walls.
  • Includes touch-screen games, interactive walls, books, toys, and craft stations.
  • Provides social interaction and entertainment while encouraging movement and creativity.
  • Equipped with instruments, paints, clay, and visual art tools.
  • Used for expressive therapy guided by trained specialists.
  • A child-friendly, calm environment helps minimize the stress and fear often associated with hospitals.
  • Reduced stress leads to better cooperation during procedures and treatments.

2. Interactive Playrooms3. Art & Music Therapy RoomsReduces Anxiety and Fear

  • Promotes Faster Healing
  • Emotional safety and reduced stress can improve immune function, speed up recovery, and reduce the need for sedation or restraints.
  • Safe spaces allow children to express emotions freely, helping them process fear, confusion, and pain.
  • Lowers the risk of developing hospital-related trauma or long-term anxiety.

 Enhances Emotional and Mental Well-being

Improves Communication and Cooperation

  • Children are more likely to engage with caregivers and staff when they feel safe and in control.
  • Promotes more effective communication and trust-building between patients, families, and healthcare teams.

The Dream Room project, hosting thousands of children monthly in over 50 dream rooms ensures edutaining safe spaces for hospitalised children.   We would love more support in helping to ensure these spaces are adding value to public hospitals across the country.
