Raphael has a plan set in oak: Become a carpenter and a wood carving artist to help support his family; one older brother and a single mother. That's why he, like his brother before him, is a student at Have Hammer...Will Travel. For those students who can afford it, there is a nominal tuition. For those who can't, like Raphael, it's free. Your donations not only pay rent, utilities, teachers, materials and upkeep of machinery and tools, but give kids like Raphael hope for the future.
Many Mexican youths and families in the Lake Chapala community do not have access to quality education, or cannot afford it. In fact, only 65% of kids in Mexico do not continue schooling beyond the 9th grade. Without a well rounded proper education and life skills, it's almost impossible to seek gainful employment or pursue higher education.
Have Hammer...Will Travel is an education solution that teaches valuable life skills to our Mexican neighbors through woodworking and carpentry. Your donations keep the program free for students in need like Raphael, and pay for scholarships, workshop rent, utilities, two professional teachers, wood and materials, and the repair or replacement of machinery and tools.
Mexican youths like Raphael who are enrolled in our school receive hands-on vocational education in woodworking, carpentry and CAD skills. This will enable them to reach their full potential in any field they choose. This career/technical and life skills education is the key to unlocking their families from the vicious cycle of poverty.
