Children in Azraq Refugee Camp in Jordan have fled war, loss, and displacement. Today the camp is home to more than 36,000 refugees, nearly 60 percent of whom are children. This project will build two inclusive and accessible playgrounds designed with university partners, one inside the camp and one in Azraq town, creating safe spaces where refugee children can heal from trauma through play and connect with the local community.
Children who have fled war carry deep trauma from violence, displacement, and loss. In Azraq Refugee Camp there are no dedicated safe playgrounds where children can play, release stress, and begin to heal. As families integrate into Azraq town, children also face social barriers and isolation. Without welcoming spaces for play, it is harder for children to process trauma, form friendships, and feel a sense of belonging.
This project will build two inclusive playgrounds designed with university partners. One will be inside Azraq Refugee Camp, featuring a tower like play structure that becomes the highest point in the camp, allowing children to climb, explore, and see their surroundings from a new perspective. The second playground will be in Azraq town, creating a shared space where refugee and local children can meet, play together, and build friendships with the local community.
These playgrounds will become spaces where children heal through play, rebuild confidence, and form friendships. Built with durable materials and thoughtful design, they are meant to last for decades. The tower playground in the camp will inspire exploration and hope, while the playground in Azraq town will bring refugee and local children together, strengthening community ties and restoring the simple right of children to play and belong.
