The Bumi Hills Anti-Poaching Unit is at the frontline of protecting Zimbabwe's threatened wildlife, on the shores of Lake Kariba & Bumi Hills where the illegal bush meat & ivory trades are rife. Our dedicated team has removed 35,000+ wire snares, investigated 250+ elephant carcasses, helped put numerous criminals behind bars & rescued scores of animals in distress. Help us keep boots on the ground, vehicles on patrol & rescue teams standing by to protect our dwindling iconic & endangered species
Poaching, snaring and illegal game hunting threatens the future of wildlife populations in the Bumi Hills area. Armed gangs operating here target a key breeding population of elephant, which has been reduced from 15,000 to a mere 3,500 in recent years. Beautiful, rare species like Sable antelope which occur here are lost to the illegal bush meat trade. The Bumi Hills Anti-Poaching Unit needs support to effectively respond to these threats and protect wildlife at risk,
The Bumi Hills Anti-Poaching Unit provides effective, structured anti-poaching operations on land and lake to protect wildlife from threats. The unit also responds to wildlife emergencies, rescuing animals in distress and undertakes forensic investigations to assist authorities in putting wildlife criminals behind bars. By assisting wildlife researchers in the area, the unit helps to inform long-term conservation strategies to implement sustainable conservation initiatives.
This project will ensure the continuation of critical anti-poaching operations, which will protect key wildlife populations. The long-term implications of effective anti-poaching operations in this area will be the recovery of dwindling wildlife populations and the return of species which have already been lost. Healthy wildlife populations will contribute to the continuation of tourism in the area, which is the key economic driver for local communities.
