Teens for Kids....Kid

DARE Network extends a big thank you to everyone who has supported the Burmese Refugee Youth Prevent Addiction Project on GlobalGiving. The Ultimate Frisbee tournaments held during January and February, 2011 for 5 of the refugee camps was a huge success with great comments from participants.

There were some challenges arranging transport and permission from authorities for our teenager teams to travel to nearby camps to play with each other, but we succeeded and everyone agreed it was worth the effort.

There were 79 mixed gender, 10 person teams from 5 Burmese Refugee Camps playing a total of 117 Ultimate Frisbee games. This means 790 Teens played Ultimate and shared Addiction Prevention Education with over 4,000 community members.

DARE Network Teenager Team Comments on Teens for Kids Project

 -        Very good for teenagers and youth to having new sport and program activity in our community to prevent addiction and having fun with activities. Not only teenagers and youth adult also having a change to participate.

-        Frisbee game to make more relationship between girl and boy. Share response and learn how to be a leader. Take healthy time with sport and can stay away from using drug/alcohol.

-        Music activity make fun and remind our kids to understand how important to keep our culture. And can learn mix music with fun and can use their mind for positive way. More time in activity and less time for addiction.

-        Teenagers get more relationship between each other and know each other more because of sport game and teenagers can have a chance to share their knowledge that they learn from DARE workers.

-        Teenager group become role model for other teenagers from community and family by doing activity as a group and we see more teenagers are joining together.

-        Teenagers understand about girl and boy have equality and responsibility.

DARE Network Team leaders in each of the camps are continuing to organize both Frisbee and art/cultural activities for youth as a way to provide drug and alcohol prevention education and divert attention from the boredom of life in a closed refugee camp. With no chance of employment or freedom to travel it’s essential that people have hope and continue to create a full and rich community life for themselves. Your donations allow DARE Network workers to continue working with refugee youth to support this and help protect against substance abuse.

DARE Network teenage volunteers also continue to spread the message about drug and alcohol prevention to younger children supported with donations from you through GlobalGiving.

At this time we would like to invite you to GlobalGiving’s recurring donation campaign.  Please visit your project at http://www.globalgiving.org/projects/burmese-refugee-youth-prevent-addiction-and-violence/
