A final update on wildfire recovery in California

The 29 wildfires that broke out across southern California between December 4th, 2017 and January 12th of this year scorched 307,930 acres, destroying 1,355 buildings and forcing more than 230,000 Californians to evacuate from their homes.

Thanks to generous support from GlobalGivers like you, our vetted nonprofit partners in southern California have been able to deliver vital aid in the immediate aftermath of the wildfires, and assist families and communities as they recover and rebuild.

Your donation has supported the following relief efforts:

  • Feeding San Diego distributed food and provided emergency assistance after the Lilac Fire in north San Diego County, which forced 10,000 residents to evacuate their homes.
  • Humane Society of Ventura County's rescue teams worked around the clock during the Thomas Fire to save 76 horses—all while using a trailer that could only hold three equines at a time.
  • Santa Barbara Foundation coordinated relief efforts with community organizations across Santa Barbara County, providing financial assistance to displaced families and building community resilience ahead of natural disasters.

While this will be the final update you'll receive from our California Wildfire Relief Fund, I'd like to thank you again for your generosity in supporting community-led recovery efforts in southern California, and for making the smart choice to donate cash to support vetted nonprofits after the wildfires.

Warmly,
Britt Lake + the GlobalGiving Team

About GlobalGiving’s Disaster Response

When a disaster strikes, recovery efforts led by people who live and work in affected communities are often overlooked and underfunded. GlobalGiving is changing this reality. Since 2004, we've been shifting decision-making power to crises-affected communities through trust-based grantmaking and support.

We make it easy, quick, and safe to support people on the ground who understand needs in their communities better than anyone else.

They were there long before the news cameras arrived, and they’ll be there long after the cameras leave. They know how to make their communities more resilient to future disasters, and they’re already hard at work. GlobalGiving puts donations and grants directly into their hands. Because the status quo—which gives the vast majority of funding to a few large organizations—doesn’t make sense.
