California Wildfire Relief Fund 2020

Summary

Hundreds of wildfires burn across California every year, destroying homes, forcing mass evacuations, and reducing air quality. This evergreen fund will be used to support immediate and ongoing response and preparedness efforts across California, including providing food, water, and shelter to people in need. The fund will remain open to provide assistance on an ongoing basis, as the location and severity of the fires fluctuate and related challenges (such as landslides) emerge.

Challenge

Californians now battle wildfires - and their longer-term effects - on an ongoing basis. In 2020 a heat wave and lightning sparked the second-largest fire in the state's history and hundreds of smaller fires burned across the state. Within months, areas impacted by fires face the risk of landslides and mudslides, flooding and more. The COVID-19 pandemic adds complexity to any relief efforts.

Solution

All donations to this fund will support relief and recovery efforts for Californians affected by wildfires and related threats. Initially, the fund helps first responders meet survivors' immediate needs for food, fuel, clean water, medicine, and shelter. As needs emerge we will support longer-term recovery efforts run by local, vetted organizations in the region. We monitor the impact on affected communities and work with partners on the ground to allocate funds to where they're needed most.

Long-Term Impact

We believe that organizations that are deeply rooted in local communities are in the best position to provide long-term support for survivors of natural disasters like wildfires. By funding the relief and recovery efforts of local organizations, donations to this fund have the potential to build stronger response capacity so that these organizations are better equipped to face future challenges. GlobalGiving will post reports about how funds have been used and will email these reports to donors.

About GlobalGiving’s Disaster Response

When a disaster strikes, recovery efforts led by people who live and work in affected communities are often overlooked and underfunded. GlobalGiving is changing this reality. Since 2004, we've been shifting decision-making power to crises-affected communities through trust-based grantmaking and support.

We make it easy, quick, and safe to support people on the ground who understand needs in their communities better than anyone else.

They were there long before the news cameras arrived, and they’ll be there long after the cameras leave. They know how to make their communities more resilient to future disasters, and they’re already hard at work. GlobalGiving puts donations and grants directly into their hands. Because the status quo—which gives the vast majority of funding to a few large organizations—doesn’t make sense.
