CARE is working to help Syrians meet their most urgent needs and protect their dignity. Jordan, the second refugee-hosting country in the world on a per capital basis and a country with one of the longest histories of doing so, hosts an estimated number of 1.3 million Syrians (among whom are 650,000 approx. registered with UNHCR as refugees). CARE is on the ground collaborating with partners and helping people displaced by the conflict and the communities hosting them.
Intense fighting in Syria has forcibly displaced more people today than any other country. Every day, thousands of Syrians flee violence to seek out food, protection, medical care and other urgently needed aid. There are an estimated 656,170 refugees in Jordan who are in desperate need of humanitarian aid. The majority of these refugees are struggling to meet the most basic needs, having left everything behind.
CARE set up refugee centers in East Amman, Zarqa, Irbid, and Mafraq, as well as provided community services in the Azraq refugee camp. CARE is also partnering with two community-based organizations in Azraq town. CARE volunteers, who are refugees themselves, assist in organizing and preparing distributions of relief supplies. We provide emergency cash assistance to pay for basic living costs, including rent, food, health services and essential household items.
CARE is also providing psychosocial assistance to women, men and children helping them to cope with their experience of violence, flight and loss of family and friends. CARE has helped families in Jordan to cope during the cold winter, distributing cash to buy heaters, blankets and fuel refills to refugees. As host communities have also been severely impacted by increased accommodation and living costs, CARE works with most vulnerable host families to address their needs.
