Cambrian Wildwood is a charity committed to nature restoration. We hold the lease on 140 hectares of formerly degraded farmland in Mid Wales. Our aim is to restore the natural habitats so that there is a wide range of wildlife, carbon capture, water retention and improved air quality. We work with neighbouring land managers to create a wider landscape impact. An important feature of our work is to encourage a diverse range of people to connect with nature and to contribute to its restoration.
We are all aware of the crisis of biodiversity loss around the world. The UK is one of the worst countries in the world for how much native wildlife remains. Protecting individual species in small nature reserves is not enough to stop the declines in this already impoverished landscape. The Cambrian Mountains has spectacular landscapes and ancient cultural traditions and stories relating to the land. Missing are the ancient wildwood and many of the animals that used to inhabit this place.
The project is restoring a substantial area of native forest and other habitats. Already the work of the project has increased bird species at Cambrian Wildwood. By increasing the area of the wildwood, other nature areas will be connected, reversing habitat fragmentation and benefiting more species from the increased scale. A bigger area will enable the project to increase the provision of educational activities and give more youngsters the profound experience of spending time in wild nature.
An area of around 7,000 acres for Cambrian Wildwood will represent a significant part of the local landscape. It will enable the project to demonstrate the benefts for wildlife and people, and encourage other landowners, including public bodies, to adopt similar land practices, and therefore significantly scale up the benefits. Potentially this could derive a wildlife area of 100 square miles ranging in altitude from sea level to 2,500 feet, comprising a diversity of habitats.
