The Statistics that in India, for every half an hour, One dalit woman is raped, for every half an hour one woman is subjected to sexual abuse in work place and every 10 minutes, one woman commits suicide or is murdered due to harassment mainly of sexual nature, do not give a comfortable feeling to any woman, living in India, midst in respective of the less educational and social status. It continues to prove that Indian women are still prisoned in psychological lock-up.
In a Scientific assessment, conducted by a leading fortnightly “India Today” The Statistics that in Tiruvannamalai district has been marked as the third most backward District in terms of female literacy, per capital income and not in access to basic health services among the 36 Districts in the State.
Being the District which tops in female illiteracy, the women of the District, especially the dalit women are exploited in many ways. The Daily News paper reports confirms the increasing number of incidences in which innocent women are sexually exploited. Based on our observation, experience and from the news paper reports, the following forms of sexual abuses / violence / exploitation is common happening in the life of the majority of women in the District.
