Canada Wildfire Relief Fund

Canada Wildfire Relief Fund

Summary

Canada is experiencing its worst wildfire season in recorded history. Nearly every province in Canada has at least one active wildfire. Hundreds of fires are burning out of control, displacing thousands of people, burning millions of acres of land, and triggering dangerous air quality concerns for millions of people from New York to Minnesota in the US. Your donation to the Canada Wildfire Relief Fund will support emergency response and long-term recovery efforts.

Challenge

Canada has experienced an exceptionally hot and dry period, with climate change playing a key role, which has contributed significantly to the out of control fires. Thousands of families have been displaced, like in Yellowknife, power outages are disrupting daily life, and homes and businesses are at risk. People from low-income, rural, and First Nations communities have less access to support and bear the brunt of the long-term impact of fires like these.

Solution

All donations to this fund will support communities affected by the wildfires in Canada, including communities affected by air quality issues. Initially, the fund helps first responders meet survivors' immediate needs for food, fuel, clean water, medicine, and shelter. As needs emerge, we will support longer-term recovery efforts run by local, vetted organizations in impacted areas, particularly those working with low-income, historically underserved communities.

How Your Donation Will Be Used

When you donate to GlobalGiving's Canada Wildfire Relief Fund, your donation will be used to:

  • Provide food and emergency medical supplies to people and animals
  • Support temporary relief and emergency supplies for displaced families
  • Provide support to frontline workers, like meal cards for firefighters and search and rescue teams
  • Meet other needs that emerge

About GlobalGiving’s Disaster Response

When a disaster strikes, recovery efforts led by people who live and work in affected communities are often overlooked and underfunded. GlobalGiving is changing this reality. Since 2004, we've been shifting decision-making power to crises-affected communities through trust-based grantmaking and support.

We make it easy, quick, and safe to support people on the ground who understand needs in their communities better than anyone else.

They were there long before the news cameras arrived, and they’ll be there long after the cameras leave. They know how to make their communities more resilient to future disasters, and they’re already hard at work. GlobalGiving puts donations and grants directly into their hands. Because the status quo—which gives the vast majority of funding to a few large organizations—doesn’t make sense.
