Thousands of older adults in Nigeria live with dementia without diagnosis, care, or understanding from family members. This project will provide care support, home visits, memory screening, and counseling to 2,000 people affected by dementia and their families. It will supply memory aids, training for caregivers, and health checks. Without support, many continue to suffer in silence. Your donation will help offer basic care for forgotten elders across local communities.
Many Nigerians living with dementia are neglected or misjudged. In rural and urban poor areas, symptoms are often confused with spiritual or cultural problems. There are no memory clinics, and family caregivers often lack basic knowledge of how to care for them. Most older people living with dementia have no access to support, and their health declines quickly due to poor care, isolation, and lack of food or medication. Women and widows are mostly affected, often without help.
The project will identify and support 2,000 people with dementia through home visits, health screening, and counseling. It will provide home safety materials, printed memory tools, and guidebooks. Family members will be trained to manage symptoms better. Caregivers will receive mobile support from health workers. In each area, a volunteer coordinator will monitor patients and assist families with regular checks. Activities will focus on dignity, care, and practical support.
With better awareness and local support, families can care for loved ones with dementia more confidently. Patients will be less isolated and safer in their homes. Regular home visits will help catch other health problems early. Some caregivers may turn their skills into community jobs. Training will also reduce harmful practices like beatings or abandonment caused by misunderstandings. The project can help build a model that may spread to other parts of the country.
