Older Nigerians with Dementia Suffer in Silence

By Joy Ojochogwu Etubi | Project Leader

Dear Donors,

We sincerely thank the donors who have already supported the Care and Assistance for 2,000 People with Dementia project. Your generosity shows compassion for elderly people who are frequently overlooked. However, the donations received so far are not sufficient to begin full implementation. More support is needed to reach those waiting for help.

Across Nigeria, many older adults living with dementia remain undiagnosed and unsupported. In some communities, memory loss and confusion are misunderstood as spiritual or cultural issues. Families may not recognize the medical nature of the condition, and there are very few dedicated memory clinics available. As a result, many elderly people experience neglect, isolation, and rapid health decline.

Family caregivers often lack basic knowledge on how to manage symptoms such as disorientation, forgetfulness, and behavioral changes. Without guidance, caregiving becomes overwhelming. Women, particularly widows, are among those most affected, as they frequently lack financial and social support.

This project will identify and assist 2,000 people living with dementia through home visits, memory screening, and health checks. Families will receive counseling and practical training to improve daily care. Printed memory aids, safety materials, and guidebooks will be distributed to support home management. Community volunteers will monitor patients and help coordinate follow-up visits.

Providing structured care and education can reduce neglect and improve safety at home. Families who understand dementia are better equipped to respond calmly and provide appropriate support. Regular contact with health workers can also help detect other medical conditions early.

Although initial donations have been received, additional funding is required before activities can begin at scale. We kindly invite more donors to support this effort to bring dignity, care, and relief to elderly people living with dementia.

Sincerely,

Joy Ojochogwu Etubi
