Pregnant women often suffer a lack of access to adequate healthcare before and during pregnancy. You can help finish construction on and furnish the first-ever maternity center in Dorze, Ethiopia so women can safely give birth and have healthy, happy, and thriving newborns!
According to the World Health Organization, one of the leading causes of death in Ethiopia are maternal and neonatal conditions. Although health facilities are available in the urban cities, meeting the patient demand and distance to healthcare sites can be challenging for expectant mothers. Our mission is to build a maternity center to provide accessible and high-quality care for women. This project will serve 3000-5000 households currently living in Gamo Highlands, Ethiopia.
The maternity center will provide medical care and health services to women in labor and after birth. Women will enter the center 1-2 weeks before they are due and are cared for by healthcare professionals and then safely give birth to ensure any complications are managed instantly and safely to reduce maternal morbidity and newborn health complications. The maternity center will be located next to a fully operational health center which can manage complex maternal cases as needed.
The maternity center is expected to care for up to 20 women at a time, each with care plans to better address individual health needs. Expectant women will have 24/7 access to the center to minimize risks and timely care for patient concerns. The center will have educational materials available to spread awareness on health. The maternity ward will serve over 3000 households in the Dorze region of Ethiopia - a remote region with decreased access to health services, especially maternal health.
