Summer 2026 Raptor Mews and Free Flight Zone

By Grace Rietscha | Grants Coordinator

The Virginia Living Museum is excited to announce our Raptor Habitats and Free Flight Zone. This expansion to our Wild Care Center opened in April 2026, providing netted outdoor habitats- also known as mews- to our various raptors. The mews are open year-round, with installed heating making them comfortable for our birds as long as the temperature remains above freezing.

We currently have three raptors living within the Raptor Habitats and Free Flight Zone: Zorro the Harris’s Hawk, Lucky the Red-tailed Hawk, and Pebble the Peregrine Falcon. Each raptor has a personal enclosure, complete with flight room and multiple levels of perches to explore. Both Zorro and Lucky are over fifteen years old, while Pebble is closer to two years old. Our raptors all came to live at the VLM due to injuries or vision issues that make them unreleasable.

Guests may witness Pebble the Peregrine Falcon being taken around the Virginia Living Museum by our keepers. From his perch on a leather glove, Pebble is able to take photos with our guests while keepers teach them more about our birds of prey. Beyond that, our Birds of Prey Behind the Scenes Tour provides guests the opportunity to learn in-depth about our raptors’ diet, habitats, and training. Birds of prey have an important role in the ecosystem, and seeing them in person inspires our guests to think about their place in the world. We hope to see you soon!
