Summary

The Academic and Career Empowerment Program prepares African American and minority students for career and employment opportunities. Our target population is BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) 9th to 12th grade students within the Fox Valley Area of Northeast Wisconsin. A segment of our target population includes immigrants and refugees. Workforce development for high school students is crucial for preparing them for future careers - helping them to acquire needed skills

Challenge

Like other African Americans and minority groups nationally, students in Fox Valley still encounter numerous socio-economic barriers to quality education, exposure to career options, and effective social-emotional, and life skills development, which limits the chances of entering or succeeding in college and financially sustaining careers and employment opportunities. Specifically, minorities continue to face higher unemployment rates, fewer job opportunities, lower pay, poorer health benefits,

Solution

Pointers strive to bridge this gap by creating a career-focused program that is geared towards working with school districts, parents, professionals, academic personnel, and students to take advantage of and receive the full benefits of career and workforce development programs.

Long-Term Impact

Our goal is to enroll 300 students in each of the three school districts, Appleton, Oshkosh, and Menasha per semester for a minimum of 800 of students per year beginning with the 2024 school year.
