Helping Native Plants Breath Again

Removing invasive weeds from Maylands Samphires

As we moved into spring this quarter, we thought there might be some reprise from the rain. But it was not to be as the last couple of months have been quite wet in Perth. This has been great news for our wetland and river sites where we have still been able to plant native seedlings to provide habitat and improve water quality. Over the last three months, we have planted more than 1,500 native seedlings and removed over 4 hectares of invasive weeds! A truly fantastic effort by all our teams.

Our volunteers had the opportunity to visit a couple of new sites over spring and were rewarded with some wonderful wildflower displays. Wildflower Reserve and Clementi Reserve in the City of Kwinana, have been particularly spectacular and have provided our volunteers with a beautiful backdrop to the day’s activities. Likewise, Baigup Wetlands and Maylands Samphires within the City of Bayswater, offered some great animal sightings. It’s the season where our reptiles start to wake up and we have seen dugites and bob tails sunning themselves on warm pathways. Waterbirds have also been in abundant display along the river. Seeing so many different species tells us that these sites are in healthy condition, which is great news for the Carnabys.

Recently, our team leader captured a great time-lapse video at one of our regular sites, Birdwood Parade Reserve, where our volunteers removed a whole box trailer full of weeds! Birdwood Parade Reserve in the City of Nedlands is adjacent to the Swan River and is part of the green corridor from Bold Park to Kings Park. Carnabys and other birds use the reserves between these two super roosts to forage for food, rest in trees and source drinking water. At this time of year, weeds can become a little overwhelming, so it’s important to remove the weeds early and provide the native plants room to breathe and grow again.

Thousands of Trees Planted for Carnaby's Black Cockatoo

Removing invasive weeds from Lesmurdie Falls

Our volunteers have been braving windy and wet conditions throughout winter, but they haven’t let it get in the way of planting season! Planting of native trees in riparian areas provides important food, nesting and roosting habitat for Carnaby’s Black Cockatoo and a myriad of other species. Winter is an important time in Perth to plant native seedlings across all ecosystems, as it gives them the best chance of survival through our hot summers. With rainfall mainly limited to June, July and August, our volunteers have planted thousands of seedlings on the dunes, along the Swan and Canning rivers and up in the hills.

Sunday the 30^th of July was National Tree Day. Over 50 volunteers joined the City of Cockburn at Bibra Lake to plant 3,125 native seedlings. Bibra Lake is part of Beeliar Regional Park and is home to a diverse range of plants and animals including quendas, bandicoots and migratory water birds. This reserve provides a vital food source for the endangered Carnaby's Black Cockatoo. It was an amazing effort by everyone involved!

Volunteers have also been re-vegetating part of Lesmurdie Falls National Park, which provides an important roosting area for the cockatoos. Teams have been planting native seedlings and Regional Coordinator from the waterways. This makes the creek lines more accessible to all native animals and encourages the natural regeneration of the bushland.

Restoring Habitat and the Great Cocky Count!

Over the past few months, our volunteers have been busy rehabilitating the black cockatoo habitat across Perth, and preparing sites for major re-vegetation projects. Since March, over 140 volunteers have helped to remove an amazing 2.7 hectares of invasive weed species from bush land areas such as Allen Park, Shenton Park, Bibra Lake and reserves along the Swan Estuary. These sites provide habitat critical to the Carnabys Black Cockatoo and the Forest Red-tailed Black Cockatoo.

In early April, our teams took part in the Great Cocky Count for the fifth year running! This is a citizen science project developed by Birdlife Australia where bird enthusiasts, the conservation oriented and keen community volunteers band together every year to count the comings and goings of cockatoos from known roosting sites at twilight. The result is a snapshot of Carnabys and Forest Red-tailed populations across Perth and the South West, providing valuable long-term data that assists with ongoing management of these beautiful birds.

We are continuing our rehabilitation efforts at The Orchard, near the Kaarakin Black Cockatoo Conservation Centre. 28 volunteers assisted with 42 hours of weed removal, which was further supported by students during our school holiday program who helped map out the vegetation. Volunteers were also treated to a walk-and-talk tour at the Kaarakin Black Cockatoo Conservation Centre, and got to meet several Forest Red-tailed Black Cockatoos, including cheeky Fluffbum and affectionate Betty in the interactive enclosure.

On the 24^th & 27^th April, our Training Coordinator, Richard McDowell, visited volunteer teams at Lesmurdie Falls National Park and Yule Brook, both significant sites for feeding and roosting black cockatoos. Richard showed the team how to identify invasive weed species to effectively contribute to restoration and rehabilitation in these areas.

As winter approaches, our teams will start on re-vegetation projects that will add ecological value to remaining bushland areas.
