Summary

Cassowary Corridor Restoration Project RCF is actively working to extend and strengthen the Cassowary Corridor in the Wet Tropics of Far North Qld by restoring deforested and degraded land through large-scale tree planting and assisted natural regeneration. This project focuses on reconnecting fragmented rainforest habitats to support the safe movement, feeding and breeding of the endangered Southern Cassowary.

Challenge

Cassowaries need large, connected areas of rainforest to survive. Over time, land clearing and development have broken the rainforest into smaller, isolated patches. This means cassowaries are often forced to travel across cleared land, roads and human-dominated areas to find food and move between habitats. These gaps in the landscape increase the risk of vehicle strikes, dog attacks and stress on cassowaries, while also reducing healthy movement of wildlife and plants across the rainforest.

Solution

The Cassowary Corridor project restores cleared and degraded land by planting native trees including those with fruits eaten by cassowaries to reconnect fragmented rainforest. This creates safe pathways for cassowaries and other wildlife, improves habitat connectivity, and strengthens the resilience of the ecosystem for the future.

Long-Term Impact

By reconnecting fragmented rainforest, the Cassowary Corridor project will support healthy cassowary populations, protect biodiversity, enhance ecosystem resilience, and ensure that future generations can experience and benefit from a thriving, intact rainforest.
