Greetings and purrs from Gili Trawangan, Indonesia! Since our last report, the rainy season has finally ended, and the weather is dry, windy and hot. Perfect for everyone who’s on their holidays here at the moment. August is the highest of high seasons and the island is super busy.
But let’s rewind a bit and have a look at our cat clinic days back in April/May!
FREE CAT CLINIC DAYS
We didn’t organize any BIG BIG spay and neuter clinics for a while, we simply took a polite step back since a permanent vet clinic was opened on the island, giving everyone the opportunity to get their cats spayed and neutered whenever they want. We did organize free clinics still, but it was mostly to take care of the cats in our care, and if anyone wanted to bring their cats while our vet was here, great, we happily spayed and neutered all cats brought to us. However, it became clear this was not enough, we started to see kittens everywhere and lots of cats that had not been sterilized yet. Also, many locals came to ask about our clinics, because their neighborhoods started to have more cats than anyone could handle.
So time to get back in chop-chop and snip-snip action for real! Our supervet Rini came for a visit, and we brought in 2 cat catchers too. We did a two day clinic and both days we were basically full by 11am. We had many locals bring in their cats, and cats from their neighborhoods, and our cat catchers went out helping. One family alone brought us 12 cats!
In total we had 72 cats and kittens visit us in just two days, and of those we spayed and neutered 54 cats (and of those: 37 cats were females!).
On top of cats, we had one very special patient. A leopard gecko! The poor gecko had an abscess in the face, but our vet Rini cleaned it in no time and the gecko was able to go home to recover. Over the years we’ve had all kind of animals visit our cat clinics, from a monkey to a python snake, from rabbits to goats, from otters to bats, and everything else in between. Luckily our vet Rini knows how to handle pretty much any animal brought to her!
This was a lovely clinic. We had the good old team back together, the clinic was busy but not too crazy, and it was heartwarming to see how much our work was appreciated by the local community. We will have our next cat clinic after high season, and before rainy season, so possibly around October-November.
This was the 25th free clinic we have organized since we started, bringing the total number of spayed and neutered cats into nearly 4000.
