Time to look back and celebrate!
This is the final closing report for AdvocAid’s 10-year anniversary project! As you are all aware from previous reports, our anniversary was not the easiest of times for the AdvocAid fambul (family in Krio). However, thanks to you, our wonderful donors, and all the hard-working and dedicated staff, we have come through with no more than a few battle scars. This year has proved the strength of this wonderful organisation and we are sure that things will be looking up from here on out!
But for now, a recap on our anniversary year in numbers:
1 – New group of AdvocAid supporters called Friends of AdvocAid, based in London, who have been helping us to fundraise and increase our capacity and exposure outside of Sierra Leone.
3 – Major fundraisers run by AdvocAid in Sierra Leone and London for our anniversary year. In Sierra Leone we held a Church and Gala fundraiser and took part in the London Legal Walk in London.
$20,420.78 – Amount raised by our supporters for our 10-year anniversary Global Giving project
2,155 – Number of women we have supported through legal aid, legal advice, education and welfare support programmes in our anniversary year.
Looking forward
While our anniversary year has come to an end, we continue to work harder than ever to provide holistic services to women and girls caught up in the criminal justice system in Sierra Leone. AdvocAid and our partners CARL are currently engaged in a project aiming to decriminalise and declassify petty offences in Sierra Leone. Every day, people are sent to prison for minor offences such as traffic misdemeanours or loitering in the street. AdvocAid want to change this by conducting baseline research on petty offences in Sierra Leone, suggesting different ways of penalising those who commit these offences and advocate for change in a system which disproportionally affects the poor and uneducated citizens of Sierra Leone.
At the end of 2016, AdvocAid were announced as winners of the Clifford Chance Access to Justice Award. The prize money and support we will receive as winners will increase our capacity and ability to support even more women and girls in 2017.
Although this project is coming to a close, we now have three brand new Global Giving projects online. These cover our three major areas of work: (i) providing access to justice, (ii) supporting female detainees and (ii) delivering post prison support to ex-detainees. Please consider continuing to support AdvocAid by donating to one of these projects.
Thank You!
