Centro Bonilla plans to build a center in Jayaco, which is a town part of Bonao located in a more rural area in the Dominican Republic. Centro Bonilla's aim is to start creating a bridge to mental health access, provide resources in the underserved communities in the Dominican Republic and educate communities on mental health with a holistic approach. Centro Bonilla provides support, a sense of community for individuals, and our overall goal is to destigmatize mental health in those communities.
There is a deficit of mental health services in the Dominican Republic, and those that exist are made primarily accessible to high income families. Within this framework the majority of services available to populations in need are located within capital cities and urban areas. There is no organized system connecting services along with a lack of therapeutic responses to trauma and domestic violence, and funding is scarce.
Centro Bonilla will help address these problems providing psychotherapeutic interventions for families, and individuals from an economically challenged area of the country and facilitate access to other resources and mental health services through financial support. Centro Bonilla will provide individual, group, family, and couples therapy that will benefit men, women, and children. There will also be workshops and community events/gatherings.
Centro Bonilla will increase awareness around the needs to treat mental health in communities in the Dominican Republic. In addition, this would also help the community leader to become more aware of the lack of mental health treatment in the underprivileged part of the population. We will enhance collaboration between Centro Bonilla and the local community leaders to help address mental health.
