This project on awareness campaigns on cervical cancer screening will be centered on educating, promoting and building the capacity of 15,000 females in 4 Provinces of Zambia, within a year so that they get to understand their medical status on cervical cancer as early as possible in order to support intervention for early treatment and reduction of mortality rates.
Cervical cancer is the major challenge among women in Zambia today and a cause for the rising mortality rates. It is ranked as the first most frequent cancer among women in Zambia, and the second most frequent cancer among women between 15 and 44 years of age. This translates to 2,330 new cervical cancer cases and 1,380 deaths from the disease in Zambia each year.
This project will bring about an effective awareness of cervical cancer and educate at least 60% of the women aged 15 and 50 in 5 provinces in Zambia by providing messages centered on Cervical cancer causes, risk factors and preventive measures available through educational films and plays. The project is currently being implemented in Kasama and Kabwe Districts of Zambia were an average of 5 women are being screened from every outreach activity
The project will help increase the number of girls and women aged 15 and 50, appreciating the true causes, prevention and treatment of cancer rather than traditional beliefs such as attributing the disease to witchcraft and more women living with cervical cancer actively seeking medical help thereby improving the quality of life among women.
