Peñasco is a community in San Luis Potosí periphery. It is known like “San Luis dump” because it is the main landfill of the city. Most of the people who live there, work by recollecting and separate garbage. It is a tradition that the sons and daughters of the garbage women start working as well since they are little kids.
In this context, many kids don’t finish elementary school and start working with their mothers. The idea of offering a different option of occupying their time is the reason that we started a choir in this place. We have almost 4 months working in this place, offering music as a way of development different musical and social abilities, giving them confidence, love and support.
We had notice that Juanito is receiving this support. He is a 10 years old boy who started going to Peñasco’s choir in May. He is one of the most committed children of this musical aggrupation. When he starts singing his whole body starts to move, a smile grow in his face and his enthusiasm spread to the entire classroom.
“I want to propose a game, I want to propose a game” he started telling Adriana, the choir teacher. “And how is this game, Juanito?” Adriana responds. “It is call I miss so much, and all in the classroom have to tell who they miss more in the entire world. For example I miss so much my mom”.
Juanito’s mom doesn’t live with him because she works in the city, so she left Juanito to her sister in Peñasco. During vacations is the only time that Juanito can see his mom.
Because to Adriana and Angelina (Peñasco’s teachers), Juanito started trusting them, little by little he started open his big heart and music give him an opportunity to explain and explore his feelings, he started to know that there are people who want to listen him.
Thank to your support, more children have the chance to know music, to explore his capabilities and develop different abilities. Thank you to support this cause!
