In the remote coastal villages bordering the Sundarbans, evening darkness still rules due to frequent load shedding and a lack of reliable electricity. But a simple solution — solar lamps — is set to bring transformative change.
A new initiative aims to distribute 100 solar lamps to 100 vulnerable households living on the edge of the Sundarbans, the world’s largest mangrove forest and a UNESCO World Heritage Site by Bangladesh Environment and Development Society (BEDS) supported by the Seacology. These solar lamps will not only brighten homes for cooking, household chores, and evening studies for children, but also enhance local watch patrolling to protect the fragile ecosystem from illegal resource extraction and threats.
The Sundarbans, home to endangered species such as the Bengal Tiger, Spotted Deer, Ganges River Dolphin, and Irrawaddy Dolphin, is a critical natural shield for Bangladesh’s southern coast. Its dense mangroves buffer cyclones and sea-level rise, acting as a life-saving barrier for millions. However, rising poverty, lack of awareness, and harsh living conditions have pushed many residents to overexploit forest resources, accelerating biodiversity loss.
This small but meaningful project intends to address two urgent needs — support for sustainable livelihoods and community-based conservation efforts. Lighting these homes will enable safe, alternative livelihoods, discourage risky night ventures into protected forest areas, and empower families to engage in conservation-friendly practices.
