In late 2022 the ABCN Scholarship Foundation awarded a record number of 45 Accelerate Scholarships to deserving young students from across Australia. Successful 2022 ABCN scholars will begin their scholarships when they start Year 11 in 2023 and conclude in December 2025.
Throughout December 2022 we celebrated our scholars at End of Year Award ceremonies held across the country to both welcome our 45 new scholars into the program and to bid farewell to our wonderful graduating scholars as they embark on their bright future post-program.
Of the 2022 applicants, 53% were from non-English speaking backgrounds, one in four live in rural or remote areas and 41% had suffered traumatic experiences.
An overwhelming majority of applications, 73%, were from young women which shows that the need is still incredibly high for support in this area. Many young women in low socioeconomic environments lack access to female professional role models. Our scholarship exposes young, disadvantaged women to corporate environments where female professionals are valued. The current ratio of female/male scholars in our program is 63:28.
We look forward to seeing this new cohort excel in their pursuit of education.
Scholar Spotlight: Danya
Accelerate Year 1 Scholar Danya was recently chosen to participate in Victoria's Youth Parliament. Danya's group put forward a bill to address “inherent structural and systematic racism” which she says is faced by African-Australians in the education system.
High Achiever Danya was one of the new scholars who delivered a speech at our 2022 Leadership Summit Dinner. In her speech she detailed her inspiring journey to being awarded an Accelerate Scholarship.
A first generation, Muslim, Sudanese immigrant, Danya arrived in Australia at just 3 months old after her parents managed to flee Sudan, and with the aid of the UNHCR in 2006.
“Today I stand in front of you all as an ABCN young scholar. Just as all my fellow scholars here today, the pride I say that with is unimaginable.
As a young female migrant in Sydney Australia, I have a driving passion within me to thrive in what I do, and ABCN has empowered me to do so to achieve my goals and dreams.
ABCN has given me the opportunity to have a platform, and to make sure so many more youth who identify similarly to me see someone like them who’s kicking goals which they can achieve and go beyond.”
