This project will provide essential medicines and medical equipment to support the treatment of women and children in sub-Saharan Africa. It will have particular impact on ensuring safer outcomes for pregnancy and childbirth as well as ensuring the well-being of children under the age of 5.
Every day, over 700 women die from pregnancy and childbirth complications-90% in low-income countries. More than 13,000 children under 5 die daily, mostly from preventable diseases. These deaths are not inevitable. With the right medicine and care, most are preventable. When a mother dies, the impact is devastating-leading to child deaths, lost income, and deepening poverty.
IHP is committed to increasing access to life-saving treatment for those who need it most. We source high-quality, long-dated donated medicines directly from pharmaceutical companies, including those used for preventing and treating the most common and preventable causes of maternal mortality and birth defects. We safely deliver these to trusted in-country partners. These medicines help remove the financial and other barriers that too often stand between women and the treatment they need.
IHP will continue to work with our partners to maintain a reliable supply of essential medicines and align deliveries with local capacity-building initiatives. Together, we aim to create lasting improvements in maternal and child health-helping mothers deliver safely and giving every child the chance to grow up healthy and strong.
