Bangladesh Environment and Development Society (BEDS) has been trying to improve the life standard of coastal women by homestead vegetable gardening, duck and ram raring, tailoring etc. since 2015.
The women of Mathurapur village live below the poverty line and are the victim of natural disasters. Every year, cyclones visit in this area. This is a highly saline area which creates several health issues for women and they could not take some protective measures due to their poverty. It is very difficult for them to conduct perform agricultural activities due to high salinity and disasters. They got training from BEDS on tailoring and they are tailoring in the BEDS center. BEDS provided few tailoring machine to the women. They were using to the machines to earn their livelihood. Their socio-economic condition has been improved.
Some of our beneficiaries said, “I live very close to Sundarbans. There is five members in my family. I have 3 children. We are forest resource harvesters. We depend on Sundarbans for our livelihood. We used to remain unfed, when we could not go to forest. My dream was to give a better life to our children. After getting the training from BEDS, I have started making dresses, bags, mask and selling them in the market. Now we eat three times in a day properly. We do not need to starve. I have admitted my children in the school and I have also started saving money for our future. My dream has fulfilled by tailoring. I motivate other poor women and also teach them how to perform tailoring. Some of them have learned tailoring by they do not have money to buy tailoring machine.”
So, it’s a heartiest appeal to all the donors for being kind to help those vulnerable women to give them a chance to come out from the cycle of poverty and to help them to fulfill the dream of better life.
