Promote Better Home for Better Life Initiative

Bangladesh is a riverine country and most of the people are farmer, but this country has a large number of densely population. Among this vast population, half of them is female and without the contribution of them in economic sector our nation can’t success in life. In that case, Bangladesh Environment Development Society   is working relentlessly to changing livelihood condition of southwestern coastal region women. They create a brand namely BANOJIBI under Sundarbans Resource Harvesters Cooperatives Society where local women produce mangrove product and different  local product that sells this under BANOJIBI brand and profit  money that can be changed their livelihood and condition and also contribute in family income.

BEDS is currently trying to raise funds from GlobalGiving platform in order to help those marginal people in the way of income generation for their better future with better economic conditions. We also hope that through taking support from various corners they will be able to use their products for earning their sound livelihood.

Mangrove based products for livelihood improvement

Most of the people of Sundarbans coastal region depends on the forest resources for their life and livelihoods. Lack of proper skill to produce, process and packaging most of them don’t know how to get maximum benefits from the minimum resources.

BEDS has established BANOJIBI campus at Dacope where coastal communities have the modern facilities to produce several non-wood mangrove based products like mangrove pickle, mangrove honey, mangrove molasses and several handicraft with fallen mangrove leaves. Coastal communities are preparing, processing, packaging and marketing of their developed products. A small-scale business has been established which is leaded by the coastal women. Thus, the community women have become empowered and contributing in their family income.

One of the women expressed her feelings, “Before, I used to work as a day labor on the water melon farm for 2 months in a year. There are 5 members in my family including my mother-in-law, husband and two children. After the establishment of BANOJIBI, I took training from here and started preparing and packaging mangrove pickle. Now I can operate modern machines for pickle packaging. Now I can contribute to family for my children’s education’’
