Coastal women's life become easier by tailoring

Coastal women has become empowered

Bangladesh Environment and Development Society (BEDS) has been trying to improve the socio-economic condition of the women of Mathurapur village (Munshijang union of Shyamnagar sub district of Satkhira district) by providing several training like tailoring training.

Impact:

A few local women learned tailoring from the trainings provided by BEDS. They learned measurement and cutting of the cloths. BEDS supported some tailoring machine to them. Now a small cottage industry has been developed. More women are coming in their center and learning and making bags, masks and cloths with the women. They are getting much order from market and their socio-economic condition has also been increased.

Feedbacks from the beneficiaries:

Some of the beneficiary expresses their feeling. ‘‘I have working as a tailor for one year. With the earned money from tailoring, I bear the educational expenses of my children and spend on household cores. Everyone in the society respects me as a tailor. I am doing well working as a tailor.”

Capacity building training and sewing equipment are necessary for the women to improve their life standard. So, BEDS has taken an initiative to empower 50 women of Mathurapur village by developing their skill on sewing and also providing them equipment related to sewing through raising fund from GlobalGiving platform.

So, it’s a heartiest appeal to all the donors for being kind to help those vulnerable women to give them a chance to have an alternate employment opportunity and lead a better life.

Nature based solution for coastal empowerment

Sundarbans mangrove forest is a blessing for the people of this region. The forest protects the local community from several disasters and also provide livelihood opportunities to the coastal people. This region is also known for its vulnerability due to climate change. This region is highly vulnerable to natural disaster due to its geographic location and people of this region live below the poverty line. It is very difficult for them to live in this high saline area. In this area, it is difficult to grow crops and most of them depend on Sundarbans resources for their livelihood. As a result, they are harvesting Sundarbans resources illegally. The women even collect viable mangrove seeds and used them for cooking fuel. By doing this, they are destroying thousands of mangrove seeds which creates great loss in the mangrove ecosystem. In this area, most of the women are engaged in fish fry collection from the river adjacent to the Sundarbans. They put their life in danger to live their livelihood and are trying heart and soul to come from the cycle of poverty.

Bangladesh Environment and Development Society (BEDS) has been working since 2013 for the betterment of the people of Sundarbans coastal region as well as mangrove ecosystem restoration. BEDS has taken an initiative of Rural Reconstruction and Ecosystem Restoration in the Sundarbans coastal region of Bangladesh by the name of “BANOJIBI” in terms livelihoods and mangrove ecosystem conservation. BANOJIBI is a Bengali Word, meaning the people whose livelihoods depend on the forests’ resources. The targeted BANOJIBI are mostly Sundarbans resource harvesters and coastal marginal farmers. The Sundarbans Resources Harvesters Cooperative Society Limited has formed with 265 members from various occupations in the Sundarbans coastal areas under BANOJIBI. BEDS trained the local people on different mangrove-based product production, processing, packaging and marketing of the product. Now they are developing different mangrove-based products, local traditional products and marketing them through BANOJIBI. Now they are getting much benefit from the products. Local women of this region have become empower from this BANOJIBI.

BEDS has supported 265 families. But there are lots of vulnerable women who needs the support. So, it’s a heartiest appeal to all the donors for being kind to help those vulnerable women to give them a chance to come out from the cycle of poverty and lead a respectful life.

Coastal women empowered through Integrated farming

Integrated faming is profitable

Bangladesh depends particularly on the agriculture sector and three fifths of the population are employed in the agriculture sector. Most of the farmers of Sundarbans coastal region of Bangladesh live below the poverty line and engaged in mono-culture practice. This practice is seasonal and in the off season the land remains barren and farmers can’t earn sufficient amount of money. The farmers are also cultivating high yielding varieties (HYV) of crops instead of indigenous varieties to meet the demand of growing population. But this increases the excess use of chemical fertilizer and pesticides. As a result, the farmers become fully dependent on the companies for HYV seeds, chemical fertilizer, and insecticides. Excessive use of chemical fertilizers and insecticides for crop production causes environmental pollutions and degrade the Sundarbans coastal biodiversity. Now a days the farmers have become helpless due to the evil cycle of company and middlemen. Rapid expansion of HYV crops cultivation process has become a threat to the native seeds, regional biodiversity, environment and human health.

To recover from this critical situation and to ensure the food security of the marginal people, BEDS has supported the vulnerable people based on their skill and need. BEDS promoted Integrated farming among the farmers of Sundarbans coastal region to ensure better life of the farmers. BEDS established a community seed bank beside the initiatives of government to save the farmers and agriculture of Bangladesh from the grips of seed companies. BEDS has conducted education program on environment friendly agricultural farming and importance of native seeds among 1040 farmers of Banishanta union under Dacope sub district of Khulna district. BEDS also trained the local community on organic farming and vermicompost and also established a vermicompost plant using of the cowdung of the livestock.

One of our beneficiaries expressed her feeling, “Before I was a random housewife. But now I have become a working woman with the help of BEDS. Now I have become self-dependent and take part in my family decision making process. This empowerment adds a value to my life.”
