Coastal women become empowered by tailoring

Coastal women are empowered through tailoring

Bangladesh Environment and Development Society (BEDS) has been trying to improve the life standard of coastal women by homestead vegetable gardening, duck and ram raring, tailoring etc. since 2015.

The women of Mathurapur village live below the poverty line and are the victim of natural disasters. Every year, cyclones visit in this area. This is a highly saline area which creates several health issues for women and they could not take some protective measures due to their poverty. It is very difficult for them to conduct perform agricultural activities due to high salinity and disasters. Moreover, they have no land of their own. They use to earn money by harvesting Sundarbans resources; mainly collecting shrimp fry. Even they do not have educational qualification to get a job. They use to lead a miserable life where there is lack of food, drinking water, cloth, nutrition. At this moment, tidal water has risen and roads, yards are under water. The women are deprived of the basic human needs. They are grooving in the darkness of poverty.

BEDS has been working to improve the life standard of the women by providing training on tailoring. Now they are using the knowledge of tailoring and making bags by themselves. By selling the bags, they are earning much profit so that they can contribute in their family expenses. Now they gain a respectful position in their family and also take part in their family decision making process.

Capacity building training and sewing equipments are necessary for the women to improve their life standard. So, BEDS has taken an initiative to empower 50 women of Mathurapur village by developing their skill on sewing and also providing them equipments related to sewing through raising fund from GlobalGiving platform.

So, it’s a heartiest appeal to all the donors for being kind to help those vulnerable women to give them a chance to come out from the cycle of poverty and lead a respectful life.

Help coastal women to lead a better life

Empowering women is a must for improving the economy of Bangladesh as women comprises slightly more than half of the population of Bangladesh. In Bangladesh, there are lots of barriers for women to get employed. Basically, women in Bangladesh are the worst sufferers. The women of Mathurapur village are the example of the worst sufferers. As the people of Mathurapur village live below the poverty line and subjected to several natural disaster like cyclones, soil salinity. It is very difficult for them to conduct perform agricultural activities due to high salinity. Moreover, they have no land of their own. They use to earn money by harvesting Sundarbans resources; mainly collecting shrimp fry, crabs, fuel wood risking their life. Even they do not have educational qualification to get a job. They use to lead a miserable life where there is lack of food, drinking water, cloth, nutrition. The women are deprived of the basic human needs.

Bangladesh Environment and Development Society (BEDS) has been trying to improve the life standard of those women by homestead vegetable gardening, duck and ram raring etc. In 2015 BEDS has trained those women but could not support with sewing machines due to fund deficiency. So, those women couldn’t utilize their gathered experience. Realizing the necessity, BEDS has taken an initiative to empower 50 women of Mathurapur village by developing their skill on sewing and also providing them equipments related to sewing through raising fund from GlobalGiving platform.

Tailoring facilitates to be educated

Tailoring helps to be educated

Bangladesh Environment and Development Society (BEDS) has been trying to improve the socio-economic condition of the women of Mathurapur village (Munshiganj union of Shyamnagar sub district of Satkhira district) by providing several training like tailoring training.

Impact:

A few local women learned tailoring from the trainings provided by BEDS. They learned measurement and cutting of the cloths. BEDS supported some tailoring machine to them. Now a small cottage industry has been developed. More women are coming in their center and learning and making bags, masks and cloths with the women. They are getting much order from market and their socio-economic condition has also been increased.

Feedbacks from the beneficiaries:

Some of the beneficiary expresses their feeling. ‘‘We live adjacent to Sundarbans. My family depends on the resources of Sundarbans. The money we have earned by harvesting resources from the Sundarbans are not enough for me and my family. That’s, I do tailoring. By tailoring I met up my personal as well as family expenses. I can afford the expenses of my education and college fee. Earning from the tailoring, is sufficient for me now.”
