Around 3.5 million people lives in the Sundarbans coastal region. Most of them live below the poverty line and depend on the forest resources for their livelihood. They risk their lives to earn their daily meals. In this situation, BEDS has been trying to improve the life standard of the Sundarbans coastal communities since 2013 by promoting alternative income generation activities. BEDS has promoted tailoring, organic farming, integrated farming and mangrove-based product development among the coastal women. BEDS has established BANOJIBI to facilitate those activities and it has become an working space for the coastal women, where they come and produce, process and package several mangrove based products like mangrove pickle, mangrove molasses, mangrove based handicrafts and different local traditional products.
One of our beneficiaries expressed her feelings and said that, “Before I was a random woman, now I have become empowered and every day I produce and package mangrove pickle. Now I have started earning money and contributing to my family”.
BEDS has been working to create a social business model which will help to create balance between human and nature. There are lots of hard working coastal women who need the support for their economic benefit. We are requesting all our donors to start monthly recurring donation.
