EMERGENCY APPEAL
In February 2026,
is facing a severe humanitarian emergency due to a massive influx of refugees and ongoing climate-related challenges. Aid operations are currently "stretched to the limit" as organizations struggle to provide basic food and shelter.
Critical Needs This Month
Refugee Crisis: Since December 2025, over 90,000 Congolese have fled to Burundi to escape conflict in the DRC. The Busuma settlement is currently overcrowded and facing health risks, including confirmed cases of cholera.
Food Shortages: Due to a massive funding gap, the World Food Programme (WFP) has been forced to cut daily food rations for refugees by 50%.
Child Malnutrition: Burundi continues to have some of the highest rates of childhood malnutrition globally. UNICEF Burundi is actively seeking support to treat thousands of children for severe acute malnutrition.
How to Help (Active Projects)
Direct Relief: You can provide immediate life-saving support through the UNHCR Burundi Emergency Appeal, which focuses on shelter, hygiene kits, and protection for refugee families.
Medical Assistance: Doctors Without Borders (MSF) is on the ground in the Ruyigi region providing emergency healthcare to the influx of new arrivals.
Community Support: GlobalGiving hosts projects that provide food items for thousands of poor families and support for orphans.
Long-term Resilience: Organizations like Welthungerhilfe and World Vision are working on climate change adaptation, vocational training, and clean water infrastructure.
In Burundi where approximately 7,000 children live on the streets due to poverty, past conflict, and climate-related displacement, several organizations offer direct ways to provide food, education, and shelter.
New Generation Burundi: A leading local organization providing outreach, "Road to School" programs, and stabilization centers for street-connected youth.
Street Child (Burundi): Implements emergency child protection and school feeding programs. They specifically target high-risk areas like the Buterere landfill neighborhood.
Burundi Kids: Operates shelters and focuses on re-establishing contact between children and their families.
UNICEF USA: Supports large-scale child protection systems, birth registration (crucial for legal rights), and nutrition programs.
SOS Children's Villages: Provides long-term family-like care and community support in Bujumbura.
Impact of Your Donation
Small amounts can create significant immediate change for a child in Burundi:
$15: Feeds a street child for one month.
$30: Covers both food and schooling for one month.
$100: Provides a bunk bed and mattress for two children in a shelter.
$300: Funds a microloan for an older youth to start a small business and leave street life permanently.
