Sub: Project report
Poverty among street children in Burundi is a severe problem, driven by the country's high levels of national poverty and the children's exclusion from school, which leaves them vulnerable to exploitation, abuse, and malnourishment. These children often lack stable families and support systems, facing daily struggles for survival, food, and shelter.
Key challenges
Economic hardship: Burundi is one of the poorest countries globally, with a high percentage of the population living below the national poverty line, which directly impacts its children.
Malnourishment: Street children are at high risk of malnourishment and are disproportionately affected by high rates of stunting and wasting in Burundi.
Lack of education: Children on the streets are not in school, which further limits their future opportunities and keeps them trapped in a cycle of poverty.
Vulnerability to abuse: Street children are exposed to a heightened risk of exploitation, abuse, and violence.
Limited social support: Many street children lack a stable family or support network. They sometimes form their own "families" on the street to pool resources and share earnings for survival, but this does not eliminate the dangers they face.
Daily struggle for survival: These children must find food and money just to survive, often engaging in begging or other activities to get by.
to victims of children’s rights abuses. The World Food Programme (WFP) has also been working in Burundi since 1968 by providing food such as school meals, malnutrition rehabilitation to starved children and helping to improve food production. Additionally, organizations like Street Child are working to build schools and eliminate as many barriers to education as possible for children in Burundi and elsewhere. Groups like the WFP, Humanarium and Street Child do substantial work to help children in Burundi. It is vital that the work continues and that more organizations participate in alleviating child poverty in Burundi.
