The heaviest rains in 100 years fell on Chennai and surrounding areas in Tamil Nadu, India over the past few weeks.  Close to 300 people have died in the floods and thousands have lost their homes.  Agricultural lands are destroyed and there is a shortage of basic supplies for people still in the area.

Today, GlobalGiving sent funds to support 11 nonprofits providing essential immediate relief efforts on the ground:

We will continue to support the efforts of GlobalGiving partner nonprofits working on the ground in India as they provide emergency relief to those affected and eventually transition to long-term recovery for survivors of this terrible tragedy. We will continue to keep you updated with information and stories about the positive change that you are making happen in the lives of those affected by the Chennai flood.

Thank you for providing hope to so many.

About GlobalGiving’s Disaster Response

When a disaster strikes, recovery efforts led by people who live and work in affected communities are often overlooked and underfunded. GlobalGiving is changing this reality. Since 2004, we've been shifting decision-making power to crises-affected communities through trust-based grantmaking and support.

We make it easy, quick, and safe to support people on the ground who understand needs in their communities better than anyone else.

They were there long before the news cameras arrived, and they’ll be there long after the cameras leave. They know how to make their communities more resilient to future disasters, and they’re already hard at work. GlobalGiving puts donations and grants directly into their hands. Because the status quo—which gives the vast majority of funding to a few large organizations—doesn’t make sense.
