In late 2015, the heaviest rains in 100 years fell on Chennai and surrounding areas in Tamil Nadu. The floods claimed more than 500 lives, displaced families, and caused devastating damage.
In the year since then, your support has provided relief in the form of food, shelter, and medical services to thousands of families in their time of greatest need. Here is an update on the projects that your donations have made possible.
Bhumi initially provided emergency relief by setting up temporary camps and mobilizing volunteers. Their work has transitioned to long-term recovery like rebuilding schools and orphanages.
Child Rights and You has equipped people with household needs like basic clothing or means to store clean water and cook safe food. They continue to provide books and school uniforms for children who lost educational resources in the floods.
India Partners continues to help support people with disabilities at their Little Hearts Home.
Society for Poor People Development continues to teach classes on first aid and disaster preparedness to 12 area schools.
Learning Links Foundation has repaired schools, repainted classrooms, and purchased books. They continue to rebuild for their students.
VOICE Trust initially provided food and emergency relief. Most recently, they have rebuilt homes destroyed in the floods.
Kalanjiyam Trust has rebuilt homes for families in more than 100 villages in Tamil Nadu’s Kanchipuram district.
Chevaliar J.L.P. Roche Victoria K.S.G. Memorial Trust Society repaired women living in affected slums with flood-response training so they’ll be prepared the next time disaster strikes.
Community, Health, Housing and Social Education has helped more than 2,500 children and their families get back on their feet after the floods.
SPHEED supplied rice, bed sheets, and mats to five families affected by the floods.
Child Aid Ireland provided blankets, food, and other immediate care to people who lost their homes.
Community Collective Society for Integrated Development provided 35 children affected by the floods with “tool kits” filled with school supplies like crayons, notebooks, and lunchboxes.
Thanks to you and all of the people who contributed to this fund, people affected by the Chennai floods are rebuilding their lives, and we are now closing this fund. Your generosity has made such a difference. Thank you so much for your support!
