On the 1st of June we took the initiative to celebrate Orphan day at the Fikelela Child & Youth Care Centre in Khayelitsha. Parishes were invited to join us on a bus trip departing from our office in Zonnebloem to the Fikelela Child & Youth Care Centre in Khayelitsha. Despite the poor response, we diverted from using the bus to using the Fikelela Child & Youth Care Centre mini bus to transport us to and fro.
It was a wonderful day, for many parishioners this was their first time to the centre, they could engage with the Fikelela carers and the children. Lots of activities took place, some members assisted to beautify the garden area, the others assisted with cooking the meal for the children, whilst some of the children sat in for a Jerry Giraffe lesson. The children were very excited to have the visitors spending time and playing games with them, and of course very sad when our time came to an end.
The Holiday club program started on the 1st July 2019, our number of sites has increased from 4 sites in 2018 to 6 sites this time round. Social Development granted Fikelela Aids Project funding for 3 sites only, being St Dominic's Hanover Park, St George the Martyr Silvertown and Church of Reconciliation Manenberg, Fikelela sourced support and made it possible for an additional 3 sites to also run the July holiday club, being Church of the Resurrection Bonteheuwel, Holy Cross Nyanga ad St Mary Magdalene Guguletu.
One of the challenges that we faced on the very first day of the Holiday program was at the site of Holy Cross Nyanga, a burglary took place and all the foods, activities, contents in the fridge and deep freezer including the actual fridge and deep freezer were stolen. We however managed to gather items from churches and individual sponsors to ensure that the program continue in Nyanga.
The Jerry Giraffe program was used at most of our sites, especially with the younger children. There is 3 lessons that we often use when we have a large group of children. (Lesson 2 - Learning about rules, Lesson 7 - Choices and Feelings & Lesson 9 - Body Pride).
We had a large number of children attending the above sites:
We are overwhelmed that so many children benefited from the Fikelela Holiday Program within one week a total of 2288 children attended.
All this could not have been achieved if it were not for all our supporters and volunteers and organizations like yourself that offer us your ongoing support and prayers.
