Be creative and see the results

By Beverley Hendricks | Director

Using our resource Jerry Giraffe has assisted us in many ways in educating children.  Introducing Jerry and getting them to hug Jerry the Giraffe is an amazing ice-breaker.  Using the talking flower encourages them to listen to each other and to respond when they hold the flower in their hands.  Once they learn these techniques interestingly they are also quick to teach others. When you share the story of good and bad touch and who is allowed to touch one really sees the children struggle with this.  It is confusing to them and so you have to be creative when you teach them.  Colouring in pictures with them on a page and sitting with them one on one they begin to understand better.  When you get them to colour what underwear the girls are wearing and what underwear the boys are wearing they immeditely register that is their private parts and should not be touched by anyone. Teaching them a song "I am special I am special so are you so are you ,  very very special very very special so are  you so are you "  this not only boosts their confidence but also get them to speak out .  It is a good resource to share with parents to teach their children about abuse, teaching parents how to approach the subject of abuse and create awareness without causing unnecessary pressure and fear. Every time Jerry is used to introduce a new topic with the children a leaft is placed onto the tree and that is the number of visits to the children.  We recently used Jerry to assist the children with a process of re-unification 3 sisters were moving to a maternal Aunty which is such a bitter sweet moment.  Jerry was then the conversational tool to get the children to express themselves the fear of a new environment, new home and learnng to do things differently.  The life skills learnt and shared will last them a life time.  Your donation enables us to continue to be creative and see the results of these sessions with the children.  Thank you for your support.
