This intervention uses a combination of Skill-based Education, and Sports participation to address the sexual and reproductive health needs of adolescent girls, specifically as it pertains to child marriage and teenage pregnancy.
Child marriage and unwanted teenage pregnancy is very common in Malawi. Young adolescent girls are the most victims of child marriage as they are pressurized into marriage by parents to escape poverty or forced to marry due to an unplanned pregnancy. Child marriage and unplanned pregnancy are the leading factors for maternal death among adolescent girls due to complication that arise during child birth or unsafe abortion. 29% of all maternal deaths occur with adolescents in Malawi.
ECT provides skill based education & safe spaces for adolescent girls' through sports participation. The girls are given information on their sexual and reproductive health and rights. They are also given opportunities to form social networks and obtain psycho-social support though sports clubs or teams, sports leadership and by giving them access to sports facilities. Through sports participation and education they are empowered to stay in school, prevent unplanned pregnancy & child marriage
This project will bring an end to child marriage and unwanted pregnancies thereby reducing adolescent maternal mortality in Kasungu district.
