This project supports SOS MEDITERRANEE's mission to rescue people in distress from unseaworthy boats in the Mediterranean Sea. Since 2016, our teams have rescued more than 42,798 survivors, including 10,400 children and 6,000 women. Many of these children are fleeing armed conflict, persecution, and violence. On board the Ocean Viking, our rescue ship, survivors receive emergency medical care, psychological support, protection services, and essential items such as food, water, and clothing.
More than 2.4 million people have attempted to cross the Mediterranean over the past decade, many fleeing armed conflict, persecution, and instability. According to international monitoring organizations, more than 33,000 people have died or gone missing along this route since 2016. Children rescued at sea often arrive exhausted, dehydrated, and in urgent need of medical care and basic supplies. Operating a rescue vessel and providing care to survivors costs close to $30,000 per day at sea.
This project helps SOS MEDITERRANEE continue assisting people in distress in the Mediterranean, in line with international law, by providing food, water, dry clothing, and medical care on board. It also strengthens post-rescue support for women with infants, many of whom have suffered sexual violence, and for children-80% traveling without a parent-who require dedicated protection, including mental health and psychosocial care delivered by trained specialists.
Running more search-and-rescue missions protects more people from losing their lives at sea. With medical care, psychological first aid, and dedicated protection support on board, survivors who have endured long and dangerous journeys can disembark in safer physical and emotional condition. This makes a critical difference for women, unaccompanied children, and newborns who face the greatest vulnerabilities.
