Updates from a crisis in the Mediterranean

By Sophie Friedman | International Communications Manager

First of all, a huge thank you to all of our donors. It's because of you that we're able to continue saving lives in the Mediterranean. We're now three quarters of the way through 2025. So far this year, SOS MEDITERRANEE has saved 1,325 people, including 321 children and 121 women. Of these children, 280 were traveling without an adult, and 24 were under age 5. At the same time, at least 1,227 people have drowned in the Mediterranean this year.*

Here's what else has happened in the last four months. On June 26, we honored UN International Day in Support of Victims of Torture with a report on torture and extortion of migrants in Libya. On August 19, to celebrate World Humanitarian Day, we asked our crew what drives their commitment to saving lives. Then, on August 24, things got more difficult. While in international waters, our rescue ship the Ocean Viking was attacked by the Libyan Coast Guard. For 20 terrifying minutes, hundreds of bullets rained down on our ship, shattering windows and gouging holes in the exterior and our lifeboats. Fortunately, neither the 87 rescued people on board nor our crew were physically injured, but all were stunned and scared.

The Ocean Viking is now out of commission, so we cannot return to sea to continue saving lives. We're doing everything possible to get back to sea, repairing our ship and working with legal support to bring the perpetrators to justice. No bullets can stop solidarity.

Thank you for donating to SOS MEDITERRANEE; your generous gifts have an immediate impact on our ability to save people in distress at sea.

*Figure according to IOM, as of September 22, 2025. Actual death toll is believed to be much higher.
