This project focuses on preventing the spread of cholera among the 1.3 million people living in camps since the Haiti earthquake, plus those in schools and on public transport systems.
There are more than 400,000 people affected by the Cholera Outbreak in Haiti. Most Haitians are not familiar with cholera, its capacity to kill within a short time and live in rural areas far from health services. Some walk for hours to get help, not only putting themselves in greater danger from added exhaustion, but also possibly spreading cholera to new locations.This project will directly benefit 206,000 people and indirectly benefit over 1 million people in communities where Plan works.
Plan will provide families with cholera adapted hygiene kits and will work to increase awareness of the disease and implement measures to prevent it. Schools will be equipped with hand washing stations, latrines and proper garbage disposal.
With the distribution of the Cholera Prevention Kits to families and schools, woman and children will be made aware of the need for proper hygiene practices. This will create an environment to prevent any future outbreak of cholera.
