Since 2017, the Foyer Ek’Abana has empowered young children through the "Ek’Abana Little Poultry Farmers" (APEK) program. This initiative, spread across various parishes, engages children in chicken micro-farming, providing them with essential life skills and the means to fund their secondary education - especially important since the centre only supports children during their primary school years (up to 6th grade).
The program not only provides income but also fosters responsibility and personal growth. At the monthly “Little Poultry Farmers” meetings, kids proudly share their journeys - learning to care for animals, staying productive after school, and forming lasting friendships. Many have managed to pay their school fees and buy uniforms, while others have become skilled farmers and encouraged friends and relatives to start their own small farms by gifting them chicks.
As participation has grown, now including children as young as 4th grade, so have the program’s financial needs. However, COVID-19 has led to a significant decline in donor support, limiting the resources available. This year, the "Little Poultry Farmers" group has 292 members, but only 18 have received chickens to start their farming activity.
Your continued support is vital to ensure these children can pursue a brighter future through this empowering program. Let's work together to ensure no child is left behind!
