Challenge

There are currently more than 1.5 million people in Eastern Province who are still using firewood, charcoal, and other dirty sources of energy for cooking. This has led to the increase in tree cutting and also affect the livelihoods of many families due to the effect of changes in climate. This project will distribute 10,000 modern clean cookstoves to these communities so as to discourage them from cutting trees and create employment for women and youths.

Solution

Kukula Solar will distribute modern and improved clean cookstoves to families in rural communities who have been depending on firewood and charcoal. This solution will help reduce the cutting of trees and save women and girls time they spend on looking for firewood for cooking. The project will also create jobs for local women and youths through the opening of a community manufacturing plant for clean cookstoves to enable them to earn a decent income and support their families.

Long-Term Impact

The project will train and empower 200 women and youths in modern stove making to help them rise out of poverty while protecting our environment and forests from degradation. The project will also help with reforestation of community forest reserves which will in turn help combat climate change and global warming which continue to pose as a threat to many countries.
