REDUCING SMOKE, RESTORING HOPE FOR RURAL FAMILIES

By Othieno Gerald | Project Leader

Access to safe and efficient cooking solutions remains a challenge for many rural families in Eastern Uganda. Through this project, women are gaining the skills and resources needed to address this challenge while improving the quality of life in their households and communities.

During the reporting period, participants completed training on constructing improved cookstoves that reduce smoke and require less firewood. The stoves provide a healthier alternative to traditional open-fire cooking methods, which often expose families to dangerous indoor air pollution. Women have shared positive feedback about cleaner kitchens and more comfortable cooking environments.

The project also focused on strengthening economic opportunities. Women received entrepreneurship training that prepared them to establish small businesses producing and selling improved cookstoves. By turning newly acquired skills into income-generating activities, participants are enhancing household resilience and improving their ability to meet family needs.

Community outreach activities helped raise awareness about the dangers of smoke exposure and the advantages of adopting cleaner cooking technologies. Demonstrations and educational sessions encouraged households to embrace solutions that promote better health and environmental sustainability.

As more families adopt improved cookstoves, communities are witnessing reduced firewood consumption and increased awareness about environmental conservation. These changes contribute to healthier households and reduced pressure on natural resources.

We thank our generous donors for making this progress possible. Your support is helping rural women build brighter futures while restoring hope, health, and opportunity to families across Eastern Uganda.
