Clean Water Access for Rural communities in Tororo

By Henry Okumu | Project Leader

Women and Girls Benefit from Nearby Water Sources
Women and girls are among the greatest beneficiaries of improved access to clean water in Tororo District. Before the project, many spent several hours each day walking long distances to collect water. This physically demanding task limited opportunities for education, income generation, and family care.

This quarter, community members celebrated the positive changes brought by improved water access. Women report saving significant time each day because water is now available closer to their homes. The time previously spent walking long distances can now be used for farming, small businesses, and caring for children.
Girls are attending school more regularly because they no longer miss classes to fetch water. Teachers have observed improvements in punctuality and participation among students. Parents are optimistic about the long-term educational benefits that access to water provides.
The project also conducted community discussions focused on gender equality and shared household responsibilities. Men and community leaders have been encouraged to support women’s participation in water management committees and decision-making processes.
The impact of clean water extends beyond convenience. Women report feeling safer because they no longer travel long distances early in the morning or late at night. Families are experiencing improved hygiene and reduced disease outbreaks.
Thanks to donor support, rural women and girls are gaining opportunities to improve their lives and build brighter futures.
