Challenge

With one of the highest child mortality rates in the world, diarrhea-related diseases are major causes of death among Afghan children. The lack of safe drinking water means students are prone to infectious diseases. The only access to clean water for these AIL Learning Center students and members of Asia Kalokhi Village is from a small well located at the Center which is insufficient to meet the needs of the population. Access to clean drinking water is key to improving these statistics.

Solution

Health education about sanitation and diseases related to unclean drinking water is provided to all students at AIL’s Learning Centers and patients treated by AIL clinics. This new well project will connect that education with practical application.

Long-Term Impact

In 2010, this Learning Center served 1700 students (77% female). There are approximately 200 families in the village. With an average of seven members per family, at least 3,000 would be served.
