No More Boiling Water

Romas, a 51 year old farmer in Cambodia, worried every day about having enough money for his family as they spent so much of their money on medical care. Along with that, his wife and children routinely drank dirty rainwater and dirty well water because it was all that they had. Now and then they would get sick from the water with stomach aches and diarrhea, and at those times, they would worry. But there was no clean water at home. And there was no way to solve this problem because they could not afford clean water.

But because of your generous giving through CWEF, Romas' family received a biosand water filter in July 2023!! After they received the biosand water filter, they used their newly-obtained clean water for cooking, drinking, and showering. Soon, all of Romas' family members recovered their health! They now also have more energy and time to earn money on their farm because they no longer need to boil water. Romas feels hopeful that his family's good situation will continue into the future. He says, "Thank you to everyone that donated to support my living standard through the clean water project."

Interview with Kanhchana

Hello CWEF Community!

We are so grateful for you and the incredible difference you are making for many Cambodians through clean water!

In this e-mail, I'd like to share more Q&A with Kanhchana, CWEF Director in Cambodia:

1. How many water filters have we distributed in Cambodia during all the years that we have worked there?

We have distributed many types of water filters like plastic water filters (ceramic filters that put clay pots inside), biosand filters made from concrete, and now we use plastic biosand filters. We have installed more than 1,000 biosand filters since 2011.

2. How long does a water project take from beginning to end?

Every project takes 1-2 years. First, we receive a request from the village leader. Then we wait until the project can be done at which point we conduct a survey of homes as well as the transportation needs for the project. Then we create a checklist of families' requests.

Next we train recipients how to care for a biosand water filter. Once the intended recipients understand how to care for the biosand water filters, we purchase materials and distribute the filters. We monitor the water filters many times to make sure that the water flow is good and that the filter is working correctly.

3. What is the impact of our water programs on Cambodia?

Clean water impacts every day activities like: drinking, cooking, farming, and more.
Having clean water also sustains incomes, provides healthy food, and gives families more time for their children's education.
It protects from bacterial, diarrheal, water-related and water-borne diseases.
It gives the body energy.
It reduces the cost of buying gas to boil water.
It reduces the number of people in rural areas drawing their drinking water from contaminated rivers, streams, water wells, and ponds.

How do CWEF water projects work?

Hello! I am so grateful for your generous partnership with CWEF in providing clean water to families in Cambodia!

Today I am sharing with you part of an interview with Kanhchana Thoy, CWEF Director in Cambodia:

How many people in Cambodia do not have clean water? According to the latest available data from 2020, More than 12 million people in Cambodia (72% of the population) lack access to safe water. Most of them live in rural areas.
What keeps people in Cambodia from getting clean water? There are multiple factors. The first is that the income people earn is too low to afford better access. The second is a lack of knowledge about the nature and impact of the water they are using as well as lack of knowledge about how to make the water safer. The third major influence is cultural practices. For example, one group of rural people receiving clean water support from CWEF is the Jerai people. Their habit is to use mountain runoff water directly without boiling it, and they previously did not realize how nearby human waste and animals contaminate their water. But through your support, CWEF has been able to teach and equip the Jerai people with the knowledge, skills, and tools to have clean water on a daily basis.
How does CWEF choose who to give water filters to? Since the need is greatest in rural areas, we seek to work with low-income communities in rural areas of Cambodia. Also, we look for communities whose leaders are motivated and interested in partnering with us.
How many water filters did CWEF give out in Cambodia last year? Last year we gave out 30 biosand water filters in Chang Village and 30 biosand water filters to the villages of Deh and Samkanigh in Rattanakiri province. So far this year, we have distributed 60 biosand water filters in Davealeng village, Deh village, Banlung, and other villages.

Think of each of these individual families - their grandparents, parents, and children - who now not only understand how their drinking water was contaminated and causing illness, but they are now empowered to sustainably access clean water every day! These families are experiencing greater health and happiness and are spending less money cleaning their water and treating water-borne illnesses because of you and your generosity! What better way to transform someone's life? Thank you so much for your heart for clean water for families in Cambodia!
