2016 was a critical year for Splash Ethiopia. This year, our Ethiopia team grew into a robust and diverse team of a dozen skilled engineers, managers, and health professionals. Our team introduced WASH programs to 12 new sites, benefitting over 7,200 kids, teachers, and staff, while continuing to strength our ties with the Ethiopian Government. The Addis Ababa Education Bureau (AAEB) demonstrated their growing commitment to and support of our work by funding a Splash-led WASH survey of all private schools in the city, and inviting Splash to join the city’s WASH Steering Committee.
Today Splash served 51,280 children at 36 schools, 10 orphanages, 5 shelters and 2 hospitals in Addis Ababa.
Splash has defined a 5-year implementation plan for Addis Ababa. Aim for 45 schools to receive WASH programs, bringing us to 20% coverage in Addis. WASH experts (Nick) to lead team to create citywide map of engineering specs, and get them approved by government Edu, Finance, Construction bureaus. Private sector collaborations (concrete companies, sanitation hardware, and sanitation behavior change. Integrate Splash work into AAEB work, so when they present standards our standard are shaping what Addis will look like in the future. As a foundational year, 2017 will pave the way for scale, replication, and completion. Will need to pilot several new supply chains (materials sourcing) and sanitation solutions in 2017 in order to standardize a final WASH model Addis that can be replicated in other cities across Ethiopia and eventually, Africa. On this trajectory, we plan to achieve 100% coverage in Addis in 2021 with a WASH model that’s been government-backed and readily adoptable by other regional municipalities.
Goal: 44 more schools, total 100,162 kids, cost per kid: $1.63.
